Featured Socialite: Jacquetta Van Zandt

Who runs the Boston scene? Everyone is buzzing about Jacquetta Van Zandt

Wyonna finds Boston's social gem for this year. See the brief stat card below, and don't forget to check out the article, as it reveals why everyone wants to be around Jacquetta Van Zandt, and it also reveals how powerful Jacquetta Van Zandt really is.

Anyone who is "anyone" knows that Jacquetta Van Zandt is at the pinnacle of socialite status in Boston, Massachusetts. She has a presence that automatically separates her from the norm. Jacquetta Van Zandt is often described as a charismatic leader by her peers and those that long to be in her inner circle.

But this socialite isn't just about rubbing elbows with the wealthy, she has a mission...

In fact, this Cancer Born socialite has her heart set on being just as powerful and significant as the historical socialite Charlotte Hawkins Brown. As you know, Charlotte Hawkins Brown devoted her life to the improvement of the African American community's social standing and was active in the National Council of Negro Women. Charlotte Hawkins Brown was an elite, educated African American woman whose ‘uplift’ strategy for African Americans reflected the tenor of the times. In 1902, Dr. Charlotte Hawkins Brown founded Palmer Memorial Institute, a school for African American students. Like Ms. Brown, Jacquetta Van Zandt has a vision to improve the lives of the Black community. Jacquetta Van Zandt is passionate about uplifting the generation of Black women that will come behind her.

Her Mission:
Jacquetta Van Zandt is passionate about saving the young girls. She feels that they are left alone in glorified disrespect. When asked what she meant by this, she explained, "They have no one to teach them about being a strong black woman. I look to help these young women and empower them. For the past 2 years I have hosted an annual luncheon where I bring 15-20 African American girls from the city to a join myself and a few friends for lunch, and girl talk. We talk to the young girls about anything they want to bring to the table. Topics have stretched from College admission to etiquette to hygiene and dress. The girls love it and we feel we have contributed to the community. This by no means is part of an organization, but something my friends and I noticed could possibly aid in reaching out to a generation of younger girls. I hope to build a Boston Chapter of the Black Socalites and incorporate this into our community service branch."

Her Education Status:
She currently has a Bachelors of Science and she is currently getting her masters degree.

The Hang Out:
You can find her hanging out at Top of The, in Boston. She offers this stern advice, "Skip the chain restaurants and find out about true eatery." And when she is not dining at this elite restaurant, you can catch her playing tennis, swimming or fundraising.

Jacquetta doesn't give her rivals any attention. She explains her attitude in countering jealousy from those outside of her circle, "I don't give them the power to think they can get to me. I step over them and keep it moving!"

Her Motto:
"Beauty fades but dumb is forever. Offer more to the world besides a pretty face."

What makes her powerful?
She has a lot of people that flock to her. And everyone believes it is because she has the 5. 1)Education, 2)Beauty, 3)Confidence, 4)Wealth, and 5)Vision. But she explains why she thinks everyone says she is powerful, "My "can do" attitude makes me powerful. I have 3 strikes against me everyday, I am black, I am a woman and I am educated. I am not supposed to exist! I was class president of my college class graduation with honors and setting a record for the highest funds ever raised for a senior class gift. I am currently in grad school at Boston College all while maintaining a full-time job in the University Advancement Office and my community service on the weekends. I am not sure where I get the time or energy.....I just keep going!"

Her Tip: Turning adversity into a networking win:
"I had lost my first job out of college and wanted to return back to the development field in higher education. This was a field that you had to know someone that knew someone. Well, I decided I would do some consulting in order to edge my way back in. A couple of months into consulting I attended a conference and a woman I had interviewed with before I had my first job was at the conference....she and I exchanged recent info and she said 'that's all well and fine if you want to do consulting, but you are wasting your time going from one non-profit to another when you should schedule an interview with me for a new position we are creating and come work with me.' She knew I was too smart to waste time with the consulting game. I interviewed got the job and spent 2 years helping her build a strong annual giving network." Her tip: create a place so that everyone can see you shine.
